FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) A project to demolish and replace 91 run-down abandoned homes on the south side of the Shiprock is getting the go-ahead. According to The Daily Times, the Navajo Housing Authority and a property management company agreed to proceed with the federally funded project in the community located on the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico.
Many of the 10-year-old homes are beyond repair due to damage. Graffiti covers the walls and trash litters the floors.
A Housing Authority official says it will seek bids by April. The authority will provide $9.3 million to tear down the homes and start rebuild them. The authority will provide more funding later but how much that will be isn't known.
